Want to learn something new about photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is a process that converts light energy to plant energy. Guess where this usually takes place. That’s right! Photosynthesis usually takes place on specialized plant organs above the ground called leaves. Leaves are usually thin and flat (laminar). This is in order to allow light to fully break through into the tissues. Respiration, guttation and transpiration all take place on plant leaves. Water and food storage are also contained on leaves although in some plants, they are adapted for a different purpose. Ferns also have structures that are similar to plant leaves. They are called fronds instead of leaves. Humans also use leaves (leaf vegetables) in their diet and these leaves are good sources of vitamins and minerals. |
